Again, new addition to the crowded Gotham heroes.Īs a one-shot, the continuation might be happen later on, but no sooner. Ghost is probably another addition similar to Misfit, someone new. Another Lady Shiva/Urban Legends one-shot is written by Che, so there's that. Really liked Miracle Molly or at least the Unsanity Collective, but this seems odd and a bit too fast to be more or less accepted to a "good"? groupĭon't know what's currently happening to Lady Shiva. Maybe that plan is scrapped since both Tims have more or less new storylines. And more are coming in a few months with season 2 already finished (another 13). And Harley Quinn is genuinely my favorite bit of superhero content I have seen in the past year, and I highly recommend signing up for DC Universe for a free trial to at least watch these initial 13 episodes. In short, Birds of Prey is perfectly fine but limited in a number of ways that Harley Quinn is not. It’s amazing, and the DC A-list really bolsters the show, even if they appear in small doses. Probably my favorite cameo is an episode that focuses on Harley trying to get Batman to be her nemesis, but he keeps sending child sidekick Robin after her, much to her dismay. Harley has guest appearances from Batman (a frequent visitor), Jim Gordon, Lex Luthor (voiced expertly by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito), Scarecrow, Bane, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and more. But outside of the Joker, Harley Quinn also has the benefit of pulling from pretty much the entire DC canon. This is something I can’t really count against Birds of Prey as much because I get that there are limits to the amount of high-profile characters you can jam into a movie like that between actor availability and limited runtime. And that’s something Birds of Prey is missing. And it uses its R-rating to produce genuinely funny jokes, not just shock value. The writing in Harley Quinn, R-rated or otherwise, is some of the most clever I’ve seen in the superhero genre since some of Marvel’s funniest movies ( Thor Ragnarok, comes to mind). Psycho getting kicked out of the Legion of Doom for calling Wonder Woman the c-word on live TV, or Harley getting under Batman’s skin by asking him repeatedly why he “f***s bats.” But in the Harley Quinn show, it’s just literally an R-rated comedy complete with jokes that use the concept to its full potential, like Dr. All Birds of Prey does is use it for a few bits of ultraviolence in action scenes and getting Harley to say “I’m Harley f***ing Quinn!” repeatedly. And yet all you have to do is turn to Harley Quinn to see how that R-rating could have actually been useful for something. One reason for Birds of Prey struggling at the box office is supposed to be its R-rating, and I can see the argument that a character young girls like (Harley) may have been better off with a PG-13 brand. The R-Rating Is Used Well And The Writing Is Stellar ![]()
